"Chesnyy Znak" Product Labeling

As part of its efforts to combat counterfeit goods, customs duty evasion, and illegal trade, the Russian government has implemented a mandatory traceability labeling system operated by the "Chesnyy Znak" (Honest Sign) platform. The list of product categories subject to mandatory labeling is continuously expanding.

Imported goods that fall under this requirement must be labeled before the customs declaration is submitted to the customs authority.

• The labeling process includes the following key stages:

• 1. Preparing detailed consumer characteristics of the products
  2. Registering product cards in the National Catalog and obtaining GTIN codes
  3. Ordering unique labeling codes from the "Chesnyy Znak" system
  4. Generating and applying labels to individual items or packaging
  5. Including the assigned labeling codes in the customs declaration
  6. Introducing the labeled goods into circulation within the system
• Possible labeling locations include:
• Seller’s (manufacturer’s) warehouse
• Freight forwarder’s or carrier’s warehouse
• Customs warehouse in the Russian Federation

Labeling at the seller’s warehouse is the most efficient option, as it eliminates additional costs related to rehandling, reopening sealed shipping cartons, and secondary logistics—while also significantly reducing overall delivery timelines.
